Diclazepam

History of Diclazepam

The drug is the direct result of the efforts of Leo Sternbach and others who in the year 1960 synthesized it and subsequently studied the effects of this drug by administering it on animal models. Diclazepam is not listed as a medication since its effects have not been studied on human models whereas commercially it is only sold as a research chemical.

Chemistry of Diclazepam

The chemical class of Diclazepam is Benzodiazpine as it contains a benzene ring in its structure coalesced with diazepine ring. The seven-member diazepine ring contains two nitrogen components located at R₁ and R₄. At R₁ the ring infused with methyl group while at R₅ the benzodiazepines ring is coalesced with a double chlorinated phenyl ring. The benzyl ring is also constituted with a chlorine group at R7 of the structure.

Usage and Effects of Diclazepam

The impact of the drug as studied by research and trails extensively in the past find a clear similarity to diazepam as they both cause stress alleviation, muscle relaxing, hypnotic, amnesia etc. The impact and influence of the drugs on the subjects are wide ranging and can be looked into from various different perspectives and angles.

Cognitive and Subjective effects

The drug causes the release of stress and anxiety. It is used as an anti-depressant though the after bouts of the drug can cause an impediment in physical energy and cognition. The usage of the drug can cause subjective experience similar in nature to mild hallucinations. The cognitive and psychosis effects however are most common when a heavy dose of the drug is administered which can also cause unforeseen effects on its part as well. The drug can cause amnesia, memory loss or information process suppression on excessive usage. It can also cause suppression in emotions and an inability to communicate in an effective manner.

Physical effects

The usage of the drug creates a feeling of stress release and muscle relaxation while it is also used as an anti-anxiety drug. The common side effects of this are the loss of energy and a continuous feeling of lethargy. It can cause the feeling of numbness, dizziness and motor control loss.

Paradoxical effects

On rare cases i.e. 1%, the use of drug can cause bipolar behavior and a loss of impulse control especially in children, patients with mental disorder and those on high dosage. The drug can also cause an addiction and leaving it could become a hard thing to do. A sudden embargo in administering of the drug can cause death in severe cases and it is advised to gradually decrease the quantity being taken before completely shunning it.

Dose and Over Dosage of Diclazepam

The dosage of the drug ranges from 0.5mg to 4mg. Light doses of the drug range from 1mg – 2mg while the commonly administered dose ranges from 2mg. A heavy dose of the drug is greater than or equal to 4mg.

The over-dosage of the drug can have adverse effects and can be fatal in most cases. The drug being administered with other depressants like Opioids and Alcohol can be lethal.

Legal Status of Diaclazepam

The drug is not listed as medication for human and is only sold as a research chemical. United States of America has legalized the use of Diclazepam though its production and outsourcing are strictly prohibited in Germany and other European countries.
